London Suburb Unites North And South Koreans For Lunar New Year Celebration

Amidst the global jubilation of the Lunar New Year, a heartwarming tale of unity unfolds in a London suburb, where North and South Koreans come together to celebrate.

For Min Jung Park, a North Korean defector now residing in New Malden, London, this festive season is bittersweet, evoking memories of loved ones left behind.

Her decision to flee was not political but driven by the harsh realities of starvation back home. Since settling in the UK in 2007, she has found solace in the vibrant Korean community of New Malden, a sanctuary where traditional festivities bring both joy and sorrow.

Ms. Park’s longing for family echoes in Yi Young Choi’s heart, another defector grappling with thoughts of siblings in North Korea.

Despite their shared struggles, the two communities of North and South Koreans rarely intersect, but the Korean Culture and Art Centre aims to change that.

By organising Lunar New Year events, they seek to bridge divides and foster a sense of kinship. Jung Hee Lee, head of the North Korean residents’ society, reflects on their shared journey, finding comfort and camaraderie in their newfound family amidst the bustling streets of London.
