Teams from England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the USA brought their best players to compete in a thrilling weekend of sport. The tournament kicked off with a round-robin format where each team faced off, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
Despite their valiant efforts, the USA and Spain finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. This set the stage for the semi-finals: Italy versus Germany and France versus England.
In the first semi-final, Germany secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Italy. The German team capitalised on their opponents’ injuries and fatigue, displaying dominant gameplay throughout. The second semi-final saw England triumph over France with a solid 2-0 win, showcasing England’s prowess and determination.
The battle for third place between Italy and France was one for the books. After a goalless match, the game went to penalties. Italy emerged victorious, winning 4-3 in a nail-biting shootout, thanks to the heroic performance of their goalkeeper.
The final showdown between England and Germany was highly anticipated, especially after their intense group stage encounter. In a gripping match, the host nation, England, clinched the title with a 2-0 victory. The highlight was a spectacular free-kick that sealed their win and brought the tournament to a thrilling close.
Throughout the tournament, the supporters’ cheers resonated around the field, creating an electrifying atmosphere and adding to the players’ energy on the pitch.
Reflecting on the event, it’s clear that Rev. Sun Myung Moon, an avid football fan and a staunch believer in the unifying power of sports, would have been immensely proud. His vision of using sports to bridge divides and foster camaraderie among people of diverse backgrounds was vividly realised during this weekend. The United Football Games epitomised his belief that sports can be a powerful tool for bringing people together in celebration of their shared passions and humanity.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event a great success. We look forward to many more such celebrations of sport and unity in the future!
